She asked for help paying for her iPhone 17 Pro Max.

In a video circulating on Instagram, a young woman says she can’t cover the payments on her new phone. Her explanation: “the family allowance alone isn’t enough for me”. The detail that set social media abuzz came later, when she said the device also helps her with her eyebrows, eyelashes, and hair. According to the video, that was part of her justification for the expense.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max went on sale in 2025 and is available in installments at stores in several countries: in Spain, the 256 GB version costs 1.469 euros upfront or about 61 euros a month over 24 installments. A device at that price, financed by someone who says they live on social assistance, is what divided those who watched the video.

For some, it’s a matter of misplaced priorities. For others, it’s just another person asking for support. So, is asking for help to pay for a luxury a necessity or an abuse of people’s goodwill?🤔
