So she did the only thing she could do: she brought the baby to class, sat the baby beside her, and hoped everything would go well. It didn’t. The baby started crying right in the middle of the explanation, and the embarrassed mother gathered her things to leave the classroom before interrupting anyone else.
Professor Sydney Engelberg didn’t let her reach the door. He walked over to her, took the baby in his arms, settled the baby against his chest, and continued talking about his subject as if carrying children while teaching were something he had been doing for years. The baby calmed down. The class continued. And that student was able to finish her day like any other student, without feeling guilty and without rushing out.
