Josiah Brooks, better known as Jazza, has taught more than 6.7 million people to draw on YouTube. But on July 31, he sat down in front of the camera to record something different, and he couldn’t do it. He tried four times. Four times he broke down before finishing the sentence.
His wife Kate spoke up. She told the community that she has a rare combination of breast cancers, something that, according to her, affects less than 1% of cases. She has already started chemotherapy, ahead of a possible double mastectomy. They have two young children. Kate had to stop working as the manager of Jazza Studios, and now every medical appointment involves a two-hour trip to Melbourne, which Jazza has not missed a single time.
To help cover the surgery and treatment, the couple launched a fundraiser with an auction of Jazza’s original works. The goal was 35,000 Australian dollars. Within a few days, the community had already raised more than 57,000. Sometimes the art you teach comes back in the form of support when you need it most.
