Fernando Concha is 66, lives in Pudahuel, Chile, and is now bedridden. Diabetes and a severe disability led to the amputation of one of his feet. “I never thought things could get this serious”, he said on Mega’s program Carmen Gloria: Fuerte y Claro.
He went there to ask his daughters for financial help, though he says he has had no contact with them for about 20 years. He says the pension his 86-year-old mother pays him isn’t enough to cover his needs.
But María Fernanda Concha told a different story: according to her, her father left the family after her mother died and completely neglected his daughters. “He has filed a lawsuit against me and my three sisters”, she said.
His own 86-year-old mother pays him about 194 dollars a month and said they’ve been “supporting him for nearly 40 years”. Host Carmen Gloria Arroyo noted that there is a duty to help one’s parents, but also exceptions when they haven’t taken care of their children, and delivered her line: “If you didn’t sow, don’t expect to reap”.
This wouldn’t be his first attempt. Should a daughter support a father who, according to her, was never there?
