A 98-year-old man heard a door close. He still didn’t know that door would never open again for his son.
He had built his entire life in that house. There, he raised that son. There, he watched him grow up, leave, and start his own family. And there, already an elderly man weakened by his illnesses, he was left completely alone the day that same son packed his things and left with another woman.
No one disputes the decision to start a new life. What was laid bare was the other thing: a 98-year-old father, with no one to bathe him, dress him, or feed him, turned overnight into a matter that no one felt responsible for resolving.
The person who stepped in had no obligation whatsoever. It was his ex-daughter-in-law. The same woman that man had left behind. She entered that house and began bathing him, dressing him, and sitting him up in bed every day, without any blood tie compelling her to do so.
His daughter recorded him and uploaded it to TikTok in October 2021. The video garnered more than three million views. She wrote the phrase that sums it up herself: “my dad chose someone else”.
No one knows whether that old man ever asked about his son again. What is known is that he continued to have someone to care for him, even if it wasn’t the person who was supposed to.
