Ada Doss, 27, was talking to her husband Andrew on the phone as she walked to her car in the south parking lot of DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. They were planning dinner. They were talking about their two daughters, six months and two years old. Then Matthew James Taylor, 41, arrived with a gun in his hand demanding her keys. The last words Andrew heard were: “Please don’t. I have babies.”
Taylor was arrested a few meters from the body on May 12, 2026 and faces capital murder charges. But the civil lawsuit filed by Andrew Doss goes further: it alleges that earlier that same day Taylor had been taken to the hospital because he supposedly needed help, that he wandered around the campus for hours, left and returned approximately 90 minutes before the shooting, and that minutes before killing Ada he had already tried to rob another woman in the same parking lot by pointing the gun at her. The lawsuit accuses the hospital and security company Allied Universal of gross negligence for failing to act despite the warnings.
DCH denies that Taylor entered or received care that day. After the crime, it implemented police escorts for employees and reviewed security protocols in the parking lots. Ada Doss was a nursing manager. She was 27 years old. Her daughters are six months and two years old.
