Log Cabin Republicans, the largest group of gay conservatives in the United States, decided to stop defending the rights of transgender people. Eleven years ago, in 2015, that cause had been officially incorporated into its mission. Today, its own website no longer mentions it: it simply describes itself as an organization for conservative “LGB” people. Hemminger justified the change by pointing to his disagreement with gender-affirming care for minors and with the participation of trans women in women’s sports.
The news did not take long to fracture the movement from within. Sarah Hunt, who served on the Log Cabin Institute’s board, publicly criticized the decision. Human Rights Campaign and National Stonewall Democrats also called it a step backward. As the group prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary next year, many are wondering whom it really represents when that date arrives.
