Fifty-two years. That is how long a family from Indore, India, had been waiting to hear a single word: girl.
Generation after generation, only boys had been born. So when Dr. Bela Shah Jain, the gynecologist attending the delivery, came out of the operating room, a scene awaited her outside that she herself decided to record: the family members stood with their hands clasped, praying silently, still not knowing what had happened inside.
When the doctor confirmed that it was a girl, the silence broke into applause, hugs, and tears. Dr. Jain uploaded the video to Instagram, and within hours it went viral throughout India. Half a century of waiting for something that in any other family would have been just another piece of news.
