Isaac Vatkin was 91 years old and his wife, Teresa, was 89. They had been married for 69 years, had built a family, and had shared practically an entire lifetime.
In her final days, Teresa was suffering from Alzheimer’s and was seriously ill at Highland Park Hospital in Illinois. Isaac was also in fragile health and was staying in a nearby room.
On Saturday, hospital staff found both of them unconscious and breathing very weakly. They then made a decision that turned their final minutes into an unforgettable scene: they placed their beds next to each other.
Their family members brought their hands together so they could touch.
Teresa died while Isaac was holding her hand. Forty minutes later, he also passed away.
Although the family was devastated, they found some comfort in knowing that they had not been alone. “You didn’t want to see them go, but you couldn’t ask for anything more”, said their grandson William Vatkin.
During the joint funeral, their daughter Clara Gesklin recalled the strength of that bond: “Their love was so strong that they simply couldn’t live without each other”.
Rabbi Barry Schechter, who led the ceremony, summed up the story with a phrase that moved everyone: “They were always in love, literally until the end. Until the very last second”.
Isaac and Teresa had raised three children in Skokie and remained very close to their grandchildren. He had worked as a kosher meat distributor; she was a homemaker and manicurist.
After 69 years together, their final farewell had no grand speeches or extraordinary gestures. Just two beds moved closer together, two hands finding each other again, and a love story that ended as it had been lived: by each other’s side.
