Conrado Ramos Estrada had been wearing a mask for years; rhinophyma caused his nose to hang over his mouth. It also made it difficult for him to breathe and caused him to snore. “It had reached my lips, and every time I took a bite, it touched the spoon”, he told the New York Post.

The Portchester, New York, resident was 57 and had spent six years consulting doctors and skin specialists without improvement. Dr. Thomas Romo met him and offered to operate at no cost at Lenox Hill Hospital. Estrada accepted and underwent reconstructive surgery.

About four weeks later, he had returned to work and was living more peacefully, without worrying about people’s stares. “I think God sent an angel to look after me”, he said of Romo.
