For 34 years she worked dragging logs in Laos’s timber industry, confined to a routine that did not belong to her. No one asked her whether she wanted to live this way. One day, everything changed: Aaron Jackson, founder of the NGO Planting Peace, moved her to the MandaLao Elephant Conservation sanctuary, and there, at last, she entered the river with nothing to stop her.
The video Jackson shared shows her splashing water with her trunk, submerged up to her neck, enjoying a moment that seems like pure happiness. Mon is the 45th elephant rescued by the organization, a number that represents 45 stories like hers: years of captivity that end in a river with each elephant enjoying its freedom.
