Khosi Buthelezi shaved every day to feel desirable.

She is 42 years old, lives in Johannesburg, and has hirsutism, a hormonal condition that covered her face, chest, arms, and legs with hair from a young age. For years, she thought hiding her beard was the only path to love. But some of her suitors told her otherwise: they preferred her that way, unshaven, just as she is. Today, she spends fifteen minutes a day trimming it with care, like someone tending to something that belongs to them and is valuable.

It hasn’t all been sweet. Khosi has received insults during her live streams, and people have taken photos of her without permission in the street. But unknown women have also stopped her just to thank her for existing, and others stopped shaving after seeing her do it naturally. “I deserve a love that doesn’t come with conditions tied to my body”, she says. Her beard stopped being something to hide and became the way she chose to be beautiful.
