Hannah Aylward is 20 weeks pregnant, and they still find it hard to believe.

Together with her husband Shane Burcaw, who has spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), they spent years undergoing in vitro fertilization without results, enduring that awkward silence that settles in every time someone else announces a pregnancy while you’re still waiting for yours. That’s why they decided to share the news carefully: first in private, then with a video and a blog dedicated solely to this moment, so they could calmly choose what to show of the baby arriving in January.

Their message was about more than just joy. Hannah and Shane thought of those who are still on that same path of waiting and uncertainty, and dedicated a few words of support to them. They also joined the Babylist It Forward movement to help complete gift registries for other families who are about to become parents. A way of saying: we know how hard it is to get here.
