Ahmed Ragab had no time to think.

That day in late September, in the Ard El-Lewa neighborhood of Giza, Egypt, he heard a scream and turned around. Up above, on a second-floor balcony, a boy of about five had just lost his balance. First, he got tangled in a clothesline, which slowed his fall for a few moments. Those were the seconds he needed.

Ragab, a 25-year-old who works at his father’s shop, ran over, positioned himself directly below and caught the little boy in his arms before he hit the ground, just inches from the pavement. A security camera captured it all, and the video spread across social media.

The footage shows what happened next: Ragab looked up at the balcony, walked away with the boy held close, and leaned against a nearby mattress, as if the adrenaline had drained all the strength from his body. According to local media, the boy was unharmed. Speaking about the moment, Ragab said everything happened so quickly that he had no time to calculate whether he would reach him. He just moved.
