For years, Alexander Maslich built a particular justification for his crimes: he claimed to pursue and murder men who had sexually abused other people. His story came to embody a contradiction that is difficult to imagine: a serial killer who claimed to be fighting other criminals ended up starring in an episode of cannibalism inside a Russian prison.
Maslich was born in 1971 and, according to his own accounts, had a childhood marked by violence and abuse. As an adult, he began presenting himself as someone who wanted to “cleanse” society of rapists and pedophiles. That narrative became a central part of the image he built around his murders.
But the story took an even darker turn when Maslich ended up facing the death penalty.
According to the investigation published by Infobae, while he was incarcerated, he planned a desperate way out with another inmate: eating a cellmate to make the authorities consider them mentally unstable and transfer them to a psychiatric clinic, thus avoiding execution.
There was nothing symbolic about the plan. The intention was to use an act of extreme violence to demonstrate that they had both lost their minds and secure a change in the conditions of their imprisonment.
The story is even more disturbing because of the contradiction it contains. Maslich had built his criminal identity around the idea that he was punishing people he considered monsters. However, when his own life was at stake, he ended up resorting to an act that placed him face-to-face with one of the most extreme forms of human violence.
His case also shows how some serial killers construct narratives around their own crimes to present themselves as something different from what they are. In Maslich’s case, that image of a supposed “predator hunter” coexisted with a criminal career that ultimately took him to the extreme.
And perhaps the most unsettling aspect of the entire story is precisely that contradiction: the man who claimed to kill to “fight evil” ended up turning his own survival into a reason to cross another line.
