Though both are battling a serious illness, one made his hospital roommate laugh to distract him from the pain.

One speaks French. The other, Russian.

They don’t share a single word, but they do share something much harder to explain: the same hospital room and the same cancer treatment. Every day, they go through the pain the other knows by heart, and among children, that needs no translation.

In a video that went viral, one of the little boys decides his roommate deserves a break. He moves around, makes gestures, tries to find a way to make him smile. And he succeeds. Laughter comes without language, without explanations, amid hospital beds, cables, and blue gowns.

At the end, a long, silent hug. The kind you don’t rehearse. Two children who don’t understand each other’s words understood each other in the only way that mattered: by being there for one another.
