She was 11 years old and alone in the middle of the sea.
It all began as an ordinary afternoon at Playa Punta Arena, Baja California Sur, when the girl and her father fell into the water from a paddleboard. He got her back onto the board and tried to swim toward shore while pushing the board, but the wind and current were stronger than his arms. Each attempt took them farther from the coast, until he made the hardest decision: leave her there, floating, and swim for help.
Meanwhile, she was left alone, clutching her yellow paddle, watching the beach grow smaller and smaller. A group of fishermen sailing nearby heard the alert and set out to look for her. They found her more than a kilometer from shore, still on the paddleboard, and pulled her aboard the boat safe and sound. She had no injuries, only the fright of having been adrift. It was all recorded on video—the same video that is now moving thousands.
