Lillian Smart was 8 years old and just wanted to swim in the lake Claiborne with her family.
Days after that day in the water, the fever came. Then double vision. Her symptoms quickly worsened and she was admitted to intensive care at a hospital in Ruston, Louisiana, as her brain swelled from within with no one able to stop it. Doctors confirmed what health authorities had announced on August 19: that a Louisiana resident had contracted Naegleria fowleri, probably after swimming in Lake Claiborne, although they had not revealed that it was Lillian. The so-called brain-eating amoeba is a microorganism that lives in warm freshwater and almost never spares those it infects.
Lillian turned 8 on Friday, August 21, hooked up to machines instead of blowing out candles. She died on Saturday, August 22. “We are devastated and honestly don’t know what to do now”, her family wrote on Facebook.
Between 1937 and 2025, just 180 cases like hers were recorded across the United States. She happened to be one of them, for going swimming on an ordinary summer day.
