Tens of thousands of likes and thousands of shares. The quote that circulated as if it were by Rasmus Højlund had everything it needed to be perfect… except for one detail.

The Instagram account of Globe Soccer, the awards created by Jorge Mendes and presented in Dubai, published an alleged statement by the Danish striker. According to that message, Højlund had supposedly explained why he celebrated a goal by imitating Cristiano Ronaldo: “I wanted to send a strong message to the Portuguese national team: if they don’t value Cristiano, there are many people in the world who still admire him”.
The quote jumped from the original post to other social networks and multiplied. But Højlund himself entered the post’s comments and denied it in four words: “I didn’t say this”.
