Walk through any city and look up. Buildings from the past had moldings, carvings, reliefs — each facade was a small work of art. Today’s are boxes with straight lines. That change was no accident; it has a name and a date.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the architect Adolf Loos published ideas that directly attacked ornamentation, and shortly afterward the Bauhaus popularized a phrase that summed it all up: form must follow function. From then on, beauty mattered less than being quick and cheap to produce.
