Amy Williams and her husband had spent four years leaving food for the neighborhood cats. Among all the visitors, one always stood out from the rest: a raccoon with an injured eye or one that had never fully formed. She wasn’t shy. She would stand on two legs on the back porch, practically asking for her portion, as if she knew that was where it was waiting for her.
Over time, the raccoon’s trust grew so much that she started bringing her babies to visit the house. One year, she returned with five. The next, with two more. But in the spring of 2023, Williams and her husband couldn’t believe what they saw walking behind her: three completely albino babies, white as if genetics had decided to make an exception for this family.
An albino baby is already rare; it is estimated to occur in 1 in 500.000 to 750.000 births. Having three in the same litter has a probability of just 1 in 10 million, according to estimates. Williams consulted experts to make sure the family was doing well, and the response reassured her: the raccoons were healthy. Despite doubts about whether a mother with her condition could raise her babies, the one-eyed raccoon proved to be a tireless mother.
