La’Shaunae Steward went from a size 24 to a completely different one. 86 kilos lighter, a new body, a life that many would imagine is easier.

But she tells it differently. The plus-size model and influencer, based in Charleston, South Carolina, with more than 130.000 followers on Instagram, admitted something few dare to say out loud: “She had MUCH more confidence when she was bigger”. Her transformation, which began in 2022, also brought skin rashes and acne breakouts that she documented without filters.

La’Shaunae, who rose to fame after collaborating with designer Jeffrey Campbell, insists that her body—before or after losing weight—should never have depended on anyone else’s approval. In 2020, she had already faced cruel comments from another blogger about her size, and today she continues to defend the idea that no one owes anyone explanations about their body. Her story leaves us with an uncomfortable question: why do we assume that losing weight always translates into feeling better?
