Dauda Kavuma had nothing when he started.
No classroom, no money, no plan in place. Only a promise he made to himself as a young man in Kampala, Uganda, when a stranger paid for his education without asking for anything in return. He swore he would repay that gesture someday. And he did so by taking in street children in the Katwe neighborhood, giving them shelter, food, and an education. What he did not plan was what happened next: those children danced barefoot in the dust, with a talent that seemed impossible to contain. Kavuma did not stop them. He let them dance.
A homemade video of those street dances spread around the world until it reached Shakira’s attention. She did not just watch: she invited them to dance alongside her at the 2026 World Cup final. In front of billions of people, alongside Madonna and BTS, those same children the world had ignored shone on the biggest stage on the planet.
It all began because a teacher decided to see something where no one else was looking.
