Serbia has just made history. 🇷🇸🏳️🌈 Ana Brnabić took office as interim president following Aleksandar Vučić’s resignation, becoming the first openly gay person to serve as head of state of a Balkan country.

And this isn’t the first time she has broken a barrier: in 2017, she had already become the first woman and the first openly gay person to become Serbia’s prime minister.

Her arrival in the presidency will be temporary, as she took office by virtue of being president of the National Assembly while the next president is selected. The milestone is especially striking in a country where same-sex couples still cannot legally marry.
