Andrew McAuley, 38, had been paddling alone for more than 30 days when the Tasman Sea became his grave. He had set out from Tasmania bound for New Zealand with a goal no one had achieved: to cross, by kayak and without company, one of the most hostile stretches of ocean on the planet.
Just 48 kilometers from Milford Sound, his voice came over the radio calling for help. The signal cut out before he could finish the sentence. Rescue teams found his kayak days later, floating empty off the coast. Inside, a camera held one of his last images: soaked, exhausted, trapped in his cabin as a storm battered the vessel.
The New Zealand coroner concluded that McAuley drowned after capsizing and being unable to right his kayak. His body was never found. Nearly eighteen years later, the mystery of what exactly happened in those final minutes remains unanswered.
