Angelina Jolie was just one year old when her parents separated.

Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand had married in 1971, but went their separate ways in 1976, after the actor’s infidelity, which, as Angelina said years later, deeply affected her mother.

Over time, the relationship between Angelina and her father became complicated. In 2002, when she was 27, the actress decided to legally remove the Voight surname from her name. Although she did not want to reveal all the reasons, she said that being close to her father was not healthy for her.

They went more than six years without speaking, until they began reconnecting in 2008.

Curiously, decades later, several of the children Angelina had with Brad Pitt also decided to stop using their father’s surname, some even legally.

Two generations and similar decisions, though with different family histories. Do you think childhood experiences can influence the decisions we make as adults?
