It all started in March 2020, when she was confined to her London home during the covid lockdown.
Anna Chojnicka, now known online as ‘Banana Bruiser’, discovered something that would change her routine forever: if you press a banana peel with a sharp object, it doesn’t break, it oxidizes. And that oxidation can be controlled.

With a seam ripper, a comb or a simple pin, Anna began engraving designs onto the fruit’s skin. She uses no ink, no paint. Just pressure, patience and time. The curious thing is that the artwork keeps changing hours after it’s finished: the marks gradually darken while the peel continues reacting with oxygen, so she has to calculate beforehand what the shadows and contrasts will look like the next day.
She has now turned nearly 400 bananas into art, one a day, and posts them all on Instagram on her account @banana_bruiser. That said, none go to waste: after photographing each piece, she eats the banana.
