In Turkey, beneath the basement of a shop, there is a place whose walls are completely covered with thousands of locks of human hair.

It all takes place in Avanos, a small city famous for its pottery. Behind an old rug, stone stairs lead to the unsettling Hair Museum, created by the artist Galip Körükçü. It all began when a woman gave the artist a lock of hair as a keepsake in 1979, and later other visitors did the same.

Today the place holds the hair of more than 16 thousand women and even made it into the Guinness Record in 1998. Each lock has names, notes, and memories attached to the damp walls of the cave.
