Ruby Rose was 15 when she went out to smoke her first cigarette.
She was at a country house in Australia, at a gathering with her mother and family friends. She and a friend saw something on the playground slide and thought it was a doll. It was a 4-year-old boy.
“Blood was coming from his ear, nose, and mouth. It was very traumatic.” Rose explained.
When the actress saw this, she carried him into the house, where the adults performed CPR and waited for the ambulance. She was sure she had saved him because the little boy was still breathing when the paramedics arrived.

Later, she was told he probably wouldn’t survive. According to what she shared on the podcast Off the Vine with Kaitlyn Bristowe, the doctors took him off life support. Then the police showed up at her school to question her, and her classmates yelled “b*by killer” at her in the hallways. What saved her was the testimony of the boy’s 7-year-old older brother, who remembered it was an accident: his sweater had gotten caught on the slide.
Now, at 40, Rose is telling the story for the first time.
