Dylan Mills was 17 months old when fire swept through his family’s home in Texas.

It was 2009. The flames left him with burns over 84 % of his body and set him on a long road to recovery. His father was also burned while trying to get him out. The years that followed were difficult, and the whole family went through them by his side.

Sixteen years later, in September 2025, the scene was different. At Tarkington High School’s famous Homecoming dance, his classmates elected him king. Ashlyn Primeaux, his best friend since they were both four years old, joined him to be crowned.

Ashlyn’s mom says they have shared almost everything: kindergarten, other school milestones, and even prom. They ran for king and queen for fun, never imagining they would win. That night, they celebrated much more than a crown: they celebrated a friendship that has endured for more than a decade.
