Arturo “Lobito” Torres, a 26-year-old Mexican boxer from Mexicali, died on September 25 after spending several days hospitalized and in an induced coma.

The tragedy occurred after his fight on September 19 against Gilberto “Torito” García, at Parque Vicente Guerrero. The bout ended in the seventh round, when the referee and his corner decided to stop it because of the punishment he was taking.

Seconds later, the boxer collapsed in the ring and began convulsing. Torres was rushed to the General Hospital of Mexicali.

There, doctors detected a serious brain injury and a blood clot, so he had to undergo surgery. Although his family initially reported that the surgery had gone well, he remained in a coma for several days and ultimately did not recover.

His death was confirmed by his family and prompted many expressions of support from the boxing community in Baja California. His last fight also turned out to be the last of his life, leaving Mexican boxing in shock.
