She has been called “fat”, people have questioned what happened to her body, and some have even speculated about surgery. Nelly Furtado decided to respond in a much simpler way: by accepting herself as she is.
The singer was just over 20 years old when the world got to know her through I’m Like a Bird. More than two decades later, her body has changed along with her life, but comparisons with that younger version of her have not disappeared.

Nelly has spoken openly about this process, and in 2025 she celebrated reaching “new levels of self-love and genuine confidence”. She also clarified that she has not undergone facial or body surgery or had any augmentations, apart from veneers on her upper teeth, after her appearance sparked all kinds of speculation.
Far from trying to hide her curves, she has continued wearing form-fitting clothes and showing herself as she wants, despite the comments she receives about her weight.
At 47, Nelly no longer has the body of the 20-year-old woman many people still remember. And perhaps the strange thing would be to expect her to still have it after more than two decades.
