Juanita Fitzgerald was 94 years old and had been living at Franklin House, a senior living facility in Eustis, Florida, since 2011.
She owed three months’ rent. Management barred her from entering. She said she had tried to pay, but they would not accept the money.

When the eviction came, she did not leave walking. She threw herself out of her wheelchair in front of the police.
They handcuffed her and took her to the Lake County jail on a 500-dollar bond. She was released two days later.

She had no family in Florida. She asked for only one thing: that no one tell her son, in Tennessee, what was happening to her.
At 94, she fought to stay in her home until the end.
