“At that age, they shouldn’t even be near a kitchen”: the controversy surrounding the mother who has been teaching her son to cook since he was 12 months old

Deanna Knight made a decision that many parents would never dare to make.

Since her son turned 12 months old, she started teaching him basic cooking tasks: pouring, mixing, and holding simple utensils. For her, it’s not a risk, but a way of showing that children understand and can do much more than adults assume.

One part of social media applauds her for trusting her son’s abilities from such a young age. Another accuses her of exposing him to unnecessary dangers at an age when he is barely starting to walk. Would you trust a one-year-old in a kitchen?

Russ is 19 months old and has officially been cooking for 7 months now 🥹 He has loved every bit of it, and watching his confidence grow in the kitchen has been so special. These pumpkin oat balls have been such a fun little fall recipe to make together 🤎 Pumpkin Oat Balls 🎃 * 1 cup rolled oats * ½ cup pumpkin puree * ¼ cup peanut butter (or almond butter) * 2 tbsp maple syrup * ½ tsp pumpkin pie spice * ½ tsp vanilla * 1–2 tbsp mini chocolate chips (optional) Mix everything together, chill for 15–20 minutes, then roll into little balls. If they’re too sticky, add a little more oats; if too dry, add a splash of pumpkin or milk. Store in the fridge for about 5 days. Perfect little toddler snack! 🧡 #toddlerrecipes #toddleractivities #montessorimom #montessoritoddler #toddlercooking
