Atlas could no longer take another step.
Weighing close to 59 kilograms, he became too exhausted to finish a difficult hike in New Mexico. His owner called the Open Space deputies of the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, who came to rescue him. The deputies described Atlas as the “sweetest little dog” they had ever rescued.
Although his owner’s quick reaction made Atlas’s rescue possible, the sight of a dog so exhausted is frustrating. It’s hard to know whether the planning fell short or the early signs of fatigue went unnoticed; even so, the case reignites the debate about the importance of knowing animals’ physical limits before venturing into challenging terrain.
