Ayshea Gunn was 27, had a degree in criminology and psychology, and had completed a course in corruption prevention. She joined Berwyn Prison in Wrexham, Wales, as a trainee officer.

Between July and November 2018, she had a relationship with 29-year-old Khuram Razaq, an inmate serving 12 years for conspiracy to commit robbery. There were numerous calls, some of them sexually explicit. Police found photos of them kissing and embracing in her bedroom, some taken on a mobile phone inside his cell. According to the court, Gunn also smuggled him underwear hidden in her bra and sent him screenshots of WhatsApp chats between other officers about prisoners, including search tactics. Prosecutor Simon Mills described it as “an act of betrayal”.

She was sentenced to 12 months in prison for misconduct in public office. The person who was supposed to keep watch over the system ended up inside it.
