Luffy does not even have a scientific name yet — he is only weeks old. He is a Red-shanked Douc Langur, one of the most endangered primates on the planet, captured in southern Laos by traffickers who most likely killed his mother to take him away. Female langurs never abandon their young voluntarily: that is what conservationists say, and that makes what happened to him even darker.
With him in their arms, the traffickers opened a post on Facebook. Price: 825 dollars. As if he were just anything. The Lao Conservation Trust for Wildlife managed to rescue him before the sale was completed, but Luffy arrived in critical condition. Today he is under intensive veterinary treatment, and his life is still in danger.
There is something about his story that does not leave you indifferent: an animal born in one of the most biodiverse jungles in the world, who lost his mother before understanding what the world was, and who now depends on human hands to survive — the same hands that also put him in danger.
