Alderico weighed 6,5 kilos and measured 55 centimeters at birth.

His mother, Ariane Borges, gave birth to him naturally at São José Maternity Hospital, in Colatina, in the northwest of the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. A team of 10 professionals was needed to handle a birth of that size.

Complications followed one after another. Ariane suffered severe hemorrhaging and needed 55 stitches for the lacerations caused by the baby’s size. During the procedure, Alderico’s umbilical cord broke, and the newborn stopped breathing for about five minutes.
He spent 10 days in the neonatal ICU. He also suffered a brachial plexus injury that paralyzed one of his arms. The case prompted an audit by the Espírito Santo Department of Health to review how the hospital handled the case.
