A giant cartoon bagel wearing sunglasses, gold teeth, and a ring bearing the letters “NYC” had been greeting customers at Bo’s Bagels in Harlem, New York, for years.

The situation changed when social media users began questioning the design and pointing out that some of its features could be offensive or evoke old stereotypical caricatures. The discussion grew rapidly after several videos and posts about the character went viral.

The shop’s owner, Andrew Martinez, explained that he ultimately decided to remove the sign after the business and its workers began receiving hostile messages. Meanwhile, the artist who created the character, Tom Sanford, said that his intention was never to offend, but to represent elements of Harlem culture.
The case sparked a debate on social media between those who felt the design could be interpreted negatively and those who saw it simply as a caricature inspired by the neighborhood.
