She bathed up to 4 times a day because a rare disease made her body smell like fish: for years, no one believed her

Kelly Fidoe-White was only 6 years old when she noticed that her urine smelled different.

She didn’t understand it then, but that tiny detail would mark the beginning of a life defined by uncomfortable looks, comments behind her back, and a loneliness she herself describes as an invisible prison. In Oldham, Manchester, this 45-year-old radiology technician grew up hearing that she smelled bad, that she should bathe more, that something about her was dirty. She showered up to four times a day. She changed her uniform twice per shift. Nothing worked.

It wasn’t until 2015 that she learned she had trimethylaminuria, a condition so rare that there are only 100 documented cases in the world. Her body simply couldn’t process a certain substance, and no amount of soap was going to change that. Today, after years of therapy and adjustments to her diet, Kelly has almost no symptoms — and uses her story so that no one else has to carry that silence alone.
