An almost imperceptible meow slipped through the noise of the excavators.
It was Pereira, Colombia, just one day after the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that shook the western part of the country on August 10, 2026. Firefighters were searching a collapsed building for survivors when something tiny moved among the dust and broken concrete: a baby kitten, alone, trapped, and nameless, waiting for someone to find it before it was too late.
They pulled it out with their hands, slowly, as if they were carrying something much bigger than its own weight. The neighbors gathered around the area, many of them still waiting for news of their own relatives, burst into applause and tears. Amid a disaster that left dozens of victims in the Coffee Region, that small living body reminded them of something simple: no life is too small to be saved.
