Melissa McCarthy had an Oscar ahead of her and no dress to wear.

Not because she lacked money or taste: five or six high-end designers, the kind who dress half of Hollywood, told her no. None of them wanted to sew a dress in her size. She herself told the story in Redbook, without dramatics, like someone recalling a humiliation she had already overcome: “I’m almost always disappointed when I go shopping”.

Rather than waiting for someone to accept her, Melissa took matters into her own hands. She launched her own plus-size clothing line, designed for women who had heard the same “no” as she had. Today, at 56, she has lost between 40 and 43 kilos, but the brand born from that rejection is still there, reminding the industry that elegance should never have been one-size-fits-all.
