José Raúl Rangel Aguilar was barely six years old when he was already coming home covered in mud. In Ciudad Guzmán, Jalisco, he got up before dawn to make bricks, sell coconuts and popsicles, and help at the bakery ‘La Reja’. His grandmother, Dolores Santos, still breaks down when she tells it.
Today, at 26 years old, that same boy is the starting goalkeeper for Chivas and the Mexican National Team. At the 2026 World Cup he became the wall Mexico needed: he went 348 minutes without conceding a goal, surpassing records that had stood untouched for decades, such as Ignacio Calderón’s in 1970 and Pablo Larios’s in 1986.
In his hometown they painted a mural of him. And every time Tala Rangel saves a ball, he unknowingly carries the story of a family that saw him leave the brickyard to reach the goal at a World Cup.
