Krépin Diatta held nothing back. The Senegalese full-back, who until recently played for Mónaco, humorously recounted how some women’s treatment of him changed as soon as he signed his first professional contract.

Before, he said, they did not even look at him. After the contract, they started telling him that “the climate in Europe” made him look fresher. A phrase that sums up, better than any analysis, the effect money has on how others perceive you.

Diatta went further: he said he looked in the mirror, searching for the physical change everyone seemed to see, and found nothing different. That’s when he understood, he said, that some people are only interested in money.
