Bernard Boursicot was barely 20 years old when he arrived in Beijing as a French diplomat. There he met Shi Pei Pu, an opera singer who confessed a secret to him: he was actually a woman, forced by his family to live as a man. Bernard, young and inexperienced, believed every word.
