For nearly a decade, Paul Prenter was Freddie Mercury’s shadow. Assistant, manager, partner. The man who knew everything no one else knew.
All of Queen despised him. They said he was manipulative, that he took advantage of his closeness to Freddie to make decisions that were not his to make. Freddie, however, defended him for years. He gave him work, trust, access to his entire life.
That trust came at a price. In 1986, Prenter sat down with a journalist from The Sun and sold Freddie’s private life for 32.000 pounds. He revealed his sex life, his fears, his silent terror of AIDS. He made it public before Freddie was ready for the world to know.
Freddie found out on May 4. He did not shout, he did not defend himself in the media. He simply stopped speaking to him. Forever.
Years earlier, Prenter had said of him: “He was more likely to see him walk on water than go out with a woman”. He also said: “When his friends began to die, Freddie knew his wild life had to stop”.
Words that sounded like a warning for someone else. Prenter did not know how to stop his either.
In August 1991, he died from AIDS-related complications. Alone, without the forgiveness he never properly asked for. Three months before the whole world mourned Freddie Mercury as an eternal legend.
The man who sold another person’s life to save his own image went first, and in silence.
