Between 4.200 and 9.000 billion euros are trapped in German bank accounts. No one spends them, no one claims them, and the German government itself still does not know what to do with them. 💶
They are deposits from deceased people with no heirs, savings forgotten for decades, and accounts whose owners disappeared without a trace. The German Ministry of Research documented it in 2021 and, five years later, the money is still there. Other countries have already found solutions: in the United Kingdom it funds social projects, in France it goes to the State, in the United States it is managed by an Unclaimed Property Office that allows it to be recovered.
