At the corner of Sixth and Bravo streets, in downtown Matamoros, Tamaulipas, a woman and a blind boy in a wheelchair spent hours asking for help from anyone crossing the street.
It was not just one afternoon. It was many hours, under the sun and then under the night sky, with a hand outstretched toward every person who passed by.
And then their bodies said enough. When night fell over Matamoros, exhaustion won the battle they had been losing all day. They fell asleep right there, on the public street, the wheelchair their only home for a few hours.
Someone saw them and took a photo without waking them; that photo began traveling through the phones of people all over the city.
There was no need to explain anything. Seeing them asleep on the asphalt was enough to understand what they had endured while awake.
The image reached the DIF of Matamoros, which, according to local reports, began following up on the case, evaluating a possible scholarship and support for the family, including the money they need for medication.
Their names are still unknown. There is no need to know them to understand that they held on until the last minute of the day, and that exhaustion, that time, overcame them where no one should have to sleep.
