In Red Bank, New Jersey, there is a restaurant where no one looks at the menu for the price. Because there are no prices.
It is called Soul Kitchen and was founded by Jon Bon Jovi together with his wife. Those who can pay leave a voluntary donation. Those who do not have a single coin still sit down, order their meal, and pay in another way: by waiting tables, washing dishes, or working for a while in the restaurant’s garden.
That is the detail that changes everything. It is not a soup kitchen. It is a real restaurant, with an appetizer, main course, and dessert, with organic ingredients and vegetarian options. No one stands in line with a tray. No one receives charity. They sit at a table, like any customer, and eat with their heads held high. Bon Jovi opened the first location in 2011, in his own hometown. Five years later, he added a second restaurant near Toms River, to help families who were still recovering from Hurricane Sandy. Over time, the foundation he runs with his wife Dorothea added a cooking school and a food bank.
And there is something more: he puts on the apron himself. He does not send representatives. He waits tables, cooks, and serves customers.
More than one hundred thousand meals have already been served. None with the label of charity. All with the dignity of choosing what to eat and how to pay for it. Sometimes helping is not feeding someone. It is letting the other person choose how to earn their meal.
