In the 1980s, while East Berlin lived isolated from European radio and television, Bonnie Tyler crossed Checkpoint Charlie to give concerts where her own records could not even be legally bought.
Her husband told it this way: people had no access to that music, but he never forgot that she was the only one who dared to go. When the Wall fell, her sales doubled overnight, almost as if East Berlin had been waiting for that moment to reward her.
Tyler died at 75 at Faro Hospital, Portugal, after intestinal surgery. But in Berlin, DJs still remember her as the voice that crossed a wall that almost no one else crossed.
